A Mumbai-based businessman Doshi, who was suffering from lung tuberculosis is now admitted admitted in hospital due to heart failure.
This 49-year-old man is the first patient in Mumbai to get 90 lakhs implant for the heart to function normally.
Heart transplants are at least three times cheaper and are considered to be one of the right choices for a person suffering due to heart failure. But for Doshi, the added lung tuberculosis in his body made a difficult choice for the doctors.
Dr Anvay Mulay, the heart surgeon mentioned that Doshi’s pressure in the lungs was too high. Dr. Anvay was the person who operated on Doshi’s hearts implantation.
On Thursday, Doshi presented a frail picture. He suffered from a massive heart attack five years ago and resulted in heart failure. Doshi lost approximately 30kgs and could barely stand while walking along the corridors.
A compact black bag strapped to his shoulder contains the external parts of the assists of the most expensive device; the left ventricular assist device (LVAD). On March 25, the LVAD was implanted just below Doshi’s heart at Fortis Hospital, Mumbai, Mulund.
“Though it was expensive, but we managed.,” said Doshi. Incidentally, LVAD was fitted in a woman past nine years ago. But, the lady passed after a few days.
“Doshi’s successful operation proves that we have one more way to treat with heart failure patients,” said Dr. Anvay.
LVAD is nothing but, a device that helps the existing heart to work better. LVAD is an artificial heart.
Barely a hundred heart transplants are carried out across the country. Annually, they are carried out because of the poor cadaver donation programme.
However, LVADs are not popular because of the costs rather they help patients. This is a mechanical pump that is implanted in a person’s chest which helps in pumping blood of a weakening heart.
