Actress Angelina Jolie has filed for a divorce from actor Brad Pitt, her husband of two years and romantic partner since 2005, her attorney said in a statement on Tuesday, signaling the end of one of Hollywood’s most glamorous and powerful couples.
The news was confirmed on Tuesday, not in a statement from the couple affirming their determination to co-parent and reiterating their love, as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were so careful to do, but in a statement from Jolie’s lawyer, who said the decision was made for the “health” of their family.
He added: “She will not be commenting and asks that the family is given privacy at this time.”
Jolie, 41, cited irreconcilable differences with Pitt, listing their date of separation as 15 September.
Brad Pitt has warned Angelina Jolie he is ready to fight for joint custody of their children amid claims she told him ‘I can’t do this anymore’ before filing for divorce.
Pitt is said to be ‘furious’ at Jolie for filing for divorce, a move he says could put their kids at risk, and sources have now said there is ‘no chance’ he will allow her to claim sole custody.
Pitt reportedly said the actress has ‘unleashed hell’ because the entire family has become targets for the paparazzi while reports have also claimed that a shocking ‘incident’ may have prompted the divorce.
In a statement to People magazine, Pitt said: “I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids.
“I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.”
Just last year, Jolie told The Telegraph the couple would “stick together whatever comes” but admitted: “Brad and I have our issues”.
She added: “To be clear: we have fights and problems like any other couple. We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad and want space.”
The couple was photographed together back in July, celebrating her son’s birthday in a West Hollywood restaurant.
