Burnt, mutilated body of a Transgender woman was found on the streets following gay hate crimes in Turkey

In a series of hate crimes in Turkey, another gruesome incident has come into the light where the body of a sex worker has been found mutilated and burnt alive just two weeks after a gay man was discovered beheaded in the same area of Istanbul.

Hande Kader, 22, had been active in demonstrations for LGBT rights in Turkey and is believed to have been arrested at least once for her activism. She was last seen getting into a client’s car last week and her partner filed a missing report when she did not return.

The 22-year-old’s mutilated body was found in the neighborhood of Zekeriyakoy and was identified using the victim’s prosthetics. Soon after the incident, Kader’s friends took to social media to spill out the anger against the gruesome act. One said the perpetrators will ‘pay the price’.

In another hate crime, a transwoman in the city southern city of Mersin was knifed by a gang of warped thugs but survived the attack last week. Muhammed Wisam Sankari, a gay Syrian refugee who had fled war-torn Syria, was found decapitated after being raped and assaulted. He could only be identified by the clothes he was wearing.

While homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey unlike many other Muslim countries, homophobia remains widespread. A recent poll by PEW Research Centre showed that nearly 80% of Turkish people think being gay is ‘morally unacceptable’.

This year’s gay pride march in Istanbul was marred by violent clashes between revelers and police with authorities firing rubber bullets and tear gas. A German lawmaker and a member of the European Parliament were also briefly detained while police chased activists into side streets and blocked them from gathering and reading out a statement, saying it was banned.
Critics say President Tayyip Erdogan and the Islamist-rooted AK Party he founded have shown little interest in expanding rights for minorities, gays, and women, and are intolerant of dissent.
