On Tuesday, the special court had announced seven-year jail term to gangster Chhota Ranjan and three others retired public servants for the fake passport case.
Judge Virender Kumar Goyal awarded the sentence to Chhota Ranjan and 3 others for offenses including forgery of valuable security under the IPC that almost entails a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.
Besides Chhota Ranjan, there are other three persons who are sentenced imprisonment- Jayashree Dattatray Rahate, Deepak Natvarlal Shah and Lalitha Lakshmanan.
Chhota Ranjan is lodged in Tihar jail. However, the other three persons who were out on bail were taken into custody on Monday; soon as the verdict was announced.
On March 28, the court has reserved the judgments in the case in which Ranjan allegedly procured a fake passport in the name of Morgan Kumar with the help of three government officials.
Lakshmanan had approached to transfer to Bengaluru but, the petition was rejected on January 9 on the basis that the matter will also listen here.
During the pendency of the plea, the high court had pre-announced a stay order on the verdict case by the trial court. However, later the High Court rejected the plea.
The four persons are convicted of the offences under the section 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document), 419(cheating by able security or will), 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and section 12 (offences and penalties) of the Passport Act.
