Journalists Of Chandigarh Press Club Protest Violence Against Fraternity

The journalists of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh initiated a protest on Tuesday, regarding the violence against the Journalists on August 25.

The journalists carried placards and raised slogans to show their protest. They demanded an action from the authorities who remained numb during the attacks on the journalists on 25 August, the day when the verdict against Ram Rahim was announced.

Post this protest the governing council sent a memorandum to Haryana’s Honourable Governor Solanki, demanding an action against the policemen.
The government has assured timely action against erring officials in response to the charter of demands.” Club President Jaswant Rana said, adding that Haryana government must compensate media persons for the damage caused to their property.

He also mentioned that the Governor also affirmed the journalists that he would have a word with the Haryana CM in this regard.

On 25 August, amidst all the chaos, over 40 vehicles including cars, bikes, Activa, OB vans that were parked in Sector 5 and belonged to the journalists were set on fire by the agitated mob. Not only this, but the cameras of the journalists and TV channels were also damaged intentionally by the mob.

Club Secretary General Barinder Rawat condemned this as an attack on freedom and expression.

“Journalists are not safe in Haryana. The government allowed the gathering, with the police not implementing the orders under Section 144 of the CrPC.  This is an unfortunate instance and deserves the strictest condemnation,” Rawat added.
