In a drive to evict illegal occupants in Jawahar Bagh in Mathura, clashes broke out between police and 3000 activists killing 22 people including an SP and an SHO.
When asked by the police to vacate the park in Mathura, the enroachers attacked them with swords, knives, guns and grenades which provoked the police to open fire. The encroachers occupied tree tops before using automatic weapons to fire against the police force. Javed Ahmed, a UP police official in Mathura, tweeted, “Huge cache of arms recovered in Mathura 45 arms of 315 bore, two 12 bore one factory made 315 bore rifle, one 12 bore rifle, four 315 bore.”
In April, Mathura district administration had issued notice asking protestors to vacate the land following a court order. The activists of ‘Swadhin Bharat Vidhik Satyagrah’ had kept forward demanding to abolish the election of President and Prime Minister of India, replace the existing currency with ‘Azad Hind Fauj’ currency and to lower prices of fuel to Rs1 per 60 liter and Rs1 per 40 liters of diesel and petrol respectively. The sect describes themselves as political and social revolutionaries.

Almost 1000 police men fought the sect, trying to regain control. SP Mukul Dwivedi, who lead the eviction yesterday evening was hospitalized after being hit by a stone on his head. He passed away at the hospital after having suffered 3 heart attacks. The SHO, Santosh Kumar Yadav, who died in the riot was shot in the head.
UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the incident and has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh for the family of the deceased officers. The Jawahar Bagh Park has now been sealed off. The land seems to be filled with smoke due to explosions from hand grenades and LPG cylinders. Nearly 400 members among the activists have been arrested.
