A 19 year old mother, Nandini gave birth to a baby girl weighing about 15lbs (6.81kgs) through a C-section on Monday last week at a Government run hospital in Hassan in south Karnataka. The local health officer, Dr. Venkatesh Raju, who had visited the baby himself, calls her a miracle based on his 25 years of experience
An average baby weighs between 2.5kgs to 2.9kgs, Nandini’s daughter weighs double than this making her world’s heaviest baby girl until now. Earlier, Carisa Rusack of US held this record weighing 14lb 5oz. Last November, Firdous Khatun, another Indian woman had given birth to the country’s heaviest baby weighing about 14.77 lbs.
The teen mother, 5’9 tall, weighed 94 kg and had a smooth pregnancy throughout. Even though the size of the mother hinted at high blood sugar levels, it was confirmed that she was not diabetic. If detected to be diabetic, the newborn baby will be at a risk of being obese. Even before delivery, Nandini’s regular checkups did not show any signs of gestational diabetes or thyroid disorders.
Nandini’s gynecologist, Dr Poornima Manu said,” She came as a big surprise for all of us. The surgery took place for nearly half an hour and it was free of any risk. She is really big and beautiful.”
Both the mother and the baby are doing well. However, the baby is being kept under observation in the neonatal intensive care unit for monitoring her developments before being discharged from the hospital. Doctors confirm that the baby has no health issues of irregular sugar levels or thyroid and is breathing well.
Nandini and Arun have been married for 2 years now and were excitedly waiting to welcome their first baby. Their “big and beautiful” daughter who is yet to be named came as a big surprise to them. The new parents are waiting to take their angel home.
